Tokyo Metro Co Ltd has teamed up with the four main cell phone providers in the capital to install base stations in the Tokyo Metro subway system to provide cell phone service to passengers on its nine lines.
n
The project involves collaboration between the Tokyo Metro Co, NTT Docomo, KDDI, Softbank and eAccess.
n
Cell phone service has been available on some subway lines since last year, but Tokyo Metro said on its website that construction work on the Ginza Line around Ueno and Asakusa, the Marunouchi Line in Shinjuku and parts of the Nanboku Line would be completed by Thursday morning, bringing cell phone services to all lines.
n
However, service will not be available between Kotake-mukaihara and Senkawa Stations on the Yurakucho and Fukutoshin Lines, where work to install a base station has been postponed until fiscal 2016, Tokyo Metro said.
n
Meanwhile, providers said that service may be interrupted in certain areas of the underground system, depending on the type of electromagnetic wave used for data transfer, Sankei Shimbun reported.
