Coral spawn in the night sea off Okinawa, create illusions of pink

ISHIGAKI, Okinawa Prefecture–A nature photographer successfully captured images of coral spawning in the sea north of Ishigakijima island, showing off one of nature’s most fascinating phenomenon.

Kirin Sekito shot photographs of pale pink eggs being released from staghorn coral on the seabed at a depth of about 10 meters for about 30 minutes on the night of May 17.

It marked the first time this year that a coral spawn in Ishigaki has been confirmed, according to Yoji Mine, a guide of Yellow Submarine Dive Studio, a local diving shop.

“Coral around Ishigakijima island are really beautiful,” Sekito said. “I am very impressed by seeing the moment of its birth in the greatness of nature.”

Sekito publishes photos of landscapes around the world, many taken under the sea, in diving magazines. Recently, he has taken pictures underwater in Japanese seas and sent them out to the world to show foreigners the attractiveness of Japan.
