DoCoMo to offer new discount plans for packet communication fees

NTT DoCoMo Inc said Tuesday it will launch a new rate discount system for packet communications services via mobile phones on Oct 1, in a bit to increase its monthly average revenue per user. In the short term, the new two-step discount system is projected to push down DoCoMo’s revenue by 20 billion yen for the current business year to March 2009. The company has already factored in the revenue fall in its earnings estimates, it said.

The Japanese mobile phone leader will introduce the new pricing system on the back of growing popularity of high-end handsets that can play video images at high speeds.
n
Other mobile phone service operators have already launched similar discount systems.
n
Unlike DoCoMo’s existing flat-rate discount fee system, the new system charges a minimum monthly fee of 1,029 yen for usage of less than 12,250 packets for both individual and corporate users.
n
Monthly fees can rise to up to 5,985 yen, depending on packet communications volume.
