Elpida anticipates operating loss

Elpida Memory Inc said Friday it expects to report the first annual operating loss since its stock listing for the year that ended last month. The only maker of dynamic random access memory chips in Japan is now bracing for a group operating loss of 25 billion yen, compared with a profit of 68,420 million yen the previous year.

The company cited a plunge in DRAM prices. With the supply glut showing no signs of abating, DRAM prices fell some 80% last year. Sales are estimated at 405 billion yen, down 17% from the previous year, and net loss is projected at 24 billion yen, reversing a year-before profit of 52,943 million yen.
