Fujitsu system sends shopping info via cell phones

Fujitsu Ltd said Wednesday that it has released a system that delivers useful information to customers in stores via cell phones. The system transmits information, with a range of up to about 2 meters from the transmitter, to handsets capable of receiving “one-segment” digital terrestrial broadcasts.

When standing near display shelves, shoppers with such phones will be able receive shop descriptions, together with information on products and discounts, and access related web sites. The system does not require a license, since it uses weak radio signals, making it fast and easy for shops to introduce, according to Fujitsu.

Fujitsu also hopes the system, whose transmitter is priced at 298,000 yen, will find such uses as giving information on displays in museums and delivering special pictures at event sites and movie theaters.
