Google adds emoticon function to desktop Gmail

Google Japan on Friday announced that it has added an emoticon function to its free web email service Gmail. Emoticons that users add to their emails will be automatically converted to DoCoMo, KDDI au and Softbank’s original emoticons respectively when they are sent to email addresses of these mobile carriers.

The company added the emoticon function to the desktop version Gmail, following the release of its mobile version in June. The new function is available on the latest version Gmail and emoticons are selectable in Rich formatting mode.

Google Japan said in a statement that “The project was started by the Tokyo office being inspired by emoticons used on Japanese mobile handset messages.”
