Governors of six Japanese prefectures seek business ties in Silicon Valley

SAN FRANCISCO – Six governors from Japan gathered Monday in California to seek tie-ups between companies in their prefectures and Silicon Valley ventures.

The governors of Shizuoka, Okayama, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Saga, and Oita stressed the advantages of local businesses at a conference at Stanford University organized by the U.S.-Japan Council, a Washington-based nonprofit body promoting bilateral relations.

Okayama Gov. Ryuta Ibaragi said a research base for developing next-generation vehicles has been set up in his prefecture and called for exchanges between local businesses and Silicon Valley ventures.

Oita Gov. Katsusada Hirose introduced his prefectural government’s efforts to establish a research and development hub for medical equipment in Kyushu.

“We are promoting the concept of an ‘East Kyushu Medical Valley’ to encourage R&D, aiming to follow the success of Silicon Valley,” Hirose said.
