KDDI au announces new handsets and monthly plan

Mobile carrier KDDI au on Tuesday unveiled 12 new handsets for summer and announced a new cheap monthly plan. The company says it will expand its targeted consumers by providing various handset choices and service plans.

KDDI au will release the new handsets gradually this month. The new handsets will be more flexibly customized by users with regards to cover, keypad and screen menu style. The company will also release a new handset in collaboration with sport brand adidas.

KDDI au said it will focus more on online video content. “LISMO Video” service, from which users can download movies through PCs to handsets, will be added to current the “LISMO Music Store” service from June.

The company also announced that it will offer the 980-yen monthly plan, “Plan SS Simple”, including free-talk time worth 1,050 yen, from June 10, to expand its base of users.

Makoto Takahashi, associate senior vice president and general manager for consumer business, said, “The new monthly plan is not aimed at fighting SoftBank’s White Plan, although the same pricing might indicate that. We don’t want to be involved in unnecessary price competition. Since users have different values, we would like to cater to various lifestyles through our services.”
