NEC Electronics to boost chip output

NEC Electronics Corp said Monday that it will expand its plant in Nakatsu, Oita Prefecture, southern Japan, to boost output of automotive microcomputers and system-on-chip products.

Specifically, the firm will construct a new facility at the plant at a cost of 2 billion yen, it said. The new facility will start mass production in the summer of next year with a monthly output capacity of one million units. The company chalked up 92 billion yen in automotive microcomputer sales in the world in fiscal 2006, seizing the third biggest market share.
