NEC to build Papua cable system

NEC Corp said Monday it has signed a contract with PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (PT Telkom) to construct the Papua cable system, a high-bandwidth optical submarine cable system that will connect Indonesia’s Papua provinces on the island of New Guinea.

The cable system, measuring 2,000 kilometers, is the first optical fiber submarine cable system to connect the Papua provinces of Indonesia and is expected to help bridge the country’s digital divide. It is designed to carry transmission speeds of 40Gbps and 100Gbps, aiming to complete PT Telkom’s nationwide optical fiber networks in Indonesia.
