Nissan Motor Co is exhibiting its autonomous driving technology for the first time in Japan at CEATEC Japan 2013, taking place at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture until Oct 5.

n

Nissan has set a special pre-determined urban route through city streets at the venue, and will give a live performance of the artificial intelligence finding a parking spot.

n

The car giving the demonstration is a Nissan Leaf base car equipped with autonomous driving technology aimed at urban driving. Five laser scanners and five cameras allow for continuous comprehension of surroundings 360 degrees around the car. Artificial intelligence reads “the movements of other cars” when they are encountered, at which point it can retrieve and undergo the appropriate moving regulation for the situation stored in its knowledge base. Using the same system, even in complex driving situations such as yielding at an intersection without a stop light or passing by parked cars, the car equipped with autonomous driving technology can make informed decisions allowing it to maneuver safely.

A car with a human driver and a car with the new technology will go through the course at the CEATEC venue simultaneously. When the two cars encounter each other, the autonomous driving car will demonstrate how it can easily read the movements of others on the road using its stored intelligence, in order to perform such decisions like when to stop and wait and when to continue driving.
