NTT Communications to acquire Pacific Crossing

NTT Communications has agreed to buy an entire stake in submarine cable operator Pacific Crossing Ltd in a deal that will add a trans-Pacific telecom cable network linking the U.S. and Japan to its portfolio. The Japanese telecom giant commonly known as NTT said its unit NTT Communications Corp has reached a basic accord with PCL’s shareholders. The deal, which an NTT Communications spokesman described as being worth over 10 billion yen, is pending approval from regulatory agencies.

The Bermuda-based Pacific Crossing operates a trans-Pacific, sub sea cable network. Its fiber optic ring network between Japan and the U.S. called PC-1 has a combined length of 21,000 kilometers and is capable of transmitting up to 3.2 terabits of data per second. The deal will help boost NTT’s services and better cope with increasing demand for Internet data traffic including online video services.
