Sanyo Electric Co said Monday that it will construct a plant for solar ingot and wafer production in Salem, Oregon. With investment of about 8.5 billion yen, the major home appliance maker plans to start construction of the plant in October 2008 and launch its operations in October 2009. The plant is expected to reach full operation in April 2010.

The plant will have an annual output capacity of about 70 megawatts, raising Sanyo’s total U.S. production capacity of ingots and wafers to about 100 megawatts.

In North America, Sanyo currently produces solar ingots and wafers, main part of solar cells, in Carson, California.

The construction of the Oregon plant is part of the company’s plan to increase its production capacity of solar cells to about 600 megawatts by fiscal 2010.
