Sanyo Electric Co said Wednesday that it plans to expand its overseas cell therapy business and to provide total solutions incorporating equipment and services.

Sanyo entered the biomedical market in 1966 with the launch of its pharmaceutical refrigerators and has since then gone on to secure a high share of the market for Biomedical & Medical Equipment in Japan. In addition, Sanyo has developed products essential for the cell therapy market, such as Japan’s first Cell Processing Center (CPC) and the world’s first Cell Processing Isolator, contributing to the development of research in the field.

n

Sanyo has also started the overseas sales of its Cell Processing Work Station (CPWS), a low cost and space saving sterile environment essential for the preparation of regenerative stem cell and cell therapies for research use. The Cell Processing Work Stations (CPWS) were installed at the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) in Kyoto University last year and on June 8, Sanyo announced that its CPWS had been installed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, marking the nation’s first installation of the CPWS as well as SANYO’s first overseas installation of the product.

The cell therapy market is rapidly growing throughout the world. Since September, 2010, SANYO E&E Corporation (SEE), based in San Diego, USA, has been producing preservation equipment for the North American market. By increasing the overseas production ratio of preservation equipment to 50%, Sanyo said it aims to expand its global share of the biomedical & medical equipment market.
