Sharp remains top handset supplier

TOKYO — Sharp Corp remained the top supplier of mobile phones in Japan in 2007 for the second straight year, market research company IDC Japan said Friday. Sharp took a 25.1% share of domestic mobile phone shipments, up from 18.6% in the previous year, thanks to the popularity of its Aquos brand models.

Panasonic Mobile Communications Co, a unit of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, maintained second place with a 13.2% share, up from 12.4%, thanks to strong sales of its Viera series. Fujitsu Ltd moved up to third from sixth, followed by Toshiba Corp and NEC Corp.
