Tokyo Electric to test underground electric vehicle chargers in Tokyo

Tokyo Electric Power Co and a redevelopment promotion committee in central Tokyo said Wednesday that they have started to test-operate electric vehicle battery chargers placed at underground parking lots.

The first such test in Japan, which will last until September next year, is aimed at promoting the use of electric vehicles. The committee is mostly made up of major companies based in the Otemachi, Marunouchi and Yurakucho business districts in Tokyo.

The electric vehicle chargers are installed at nine parking lots of buildings in the area. At the Shin-Marunouchi Building, they installed a high-speed model that takes only 10 minutes to charge a vehicle to allow it to travel about 60 kilometers.

The other eight places have ordinary chargers that can be used for electric vehicles of Mitsubishi Motors Corp and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.

Tokyo Electric and the committee will study the durability of the chargers, which are available for free.
