Toshiba to raise stake in U.S. firm for SD card-based content delivery

Toshiba Corp it will make an additional equity investment of $20 million in MOD Systems Inc of the United States that plans to start distributing digital content via SD flash memory cards. The investment, on top of an initial investment of $4 million, is expected to bring Toshiba’s stake in the U.S. firm to over 20%.

MOD’s new service, to be launched next spring, will allow users to download digital content to SD cards from terminals at discount stores and other retail outlets. Users can enjoy the content with specialized players.

Toshiba said it plans to develop set-top boxes that will allow users to enjoy content on televisions and portable devices to let them enjoy content anywhere. It will also develop high-capacity SD cards.

MOD has some 4,000 titles licensed from major movie studios for the distribution, Toshiba said.
